Fiber Optic Patch Cord Guide

A patch cord is a fiber cable with connectors on both ends. It links equipment, panels and frames, and it is the part of a fiber network that moves most often. This guide explains how to choose and handle patch cords. It is a guide only; no patch cord product is listed on this site.

What patch cords connect

Patch cords connect anything that must be rearranged: a panel position to a switch port, a frame position to another frame, a test instrument to a circuit under test. Because they are moved often, they are also the most handled and most abused part of a fiber plant.

A patch cord's job is simple, but its specification is not casual. Connector family, polish type and fiber type must all match the two points it joins, or the cord itself becomes the fault.

Choosing the right patch cord

Handling and labeling practice

Treat patch cords as precision parts. Keep protective caps on unused connectors, never pull a cord by its cable, and never bend a cord sharply around a rack edge. A cord damaged by handling looks fine and tests badly, which wastes more fault-finding time than any other single cause.

Label both ends of every patch cord with the circuit it carries. When a cord is moved, update the record the same day. A patching record that lags reality is worse than no record, because it sends technicians to the wrong port.
